THE RECIPE

Estimated time for preparation: 10/15 minutes

Ingredients for 2 cups:

  • 2 cups of water

  • 1 black tea bag

  • 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon

  • 2 cardamom pods

  • 1 piece of fresh ginger (about 2 cm)

  • 1/2 teaspoon of ground nutmeg

  • 6 cloves

  • 1/4 teaspoon of ground cumin

  • 1 cup of milk (whole milk, oat milk, or any other vegan alternative)

Instructions:

  1. In a small pot, put the water and start to warm it up.

  2. With a mortar, mash the ginger to release its flavor.

  3. Do the same with the cloves and the cardamom seeds.

  4. Mix together all the ingredients in the pot and bring everything to a boil.

  5. Once it starts to boil, lower the temperature and add the tea bag.

  6. Let it simmer for 3 minutes.

  7. Add the milk and finish cooking at medium heat for 2 minutes more.

  8. Turn off the heat and let it rest for 3 minutes, then use a filter to serve it without letting the spices fall into your cup.

  9. If you like it sweet you can add some sugar, honey, or any other alternative.

Extra tip: Let the chai aside for a few hours (around 3 to 4) in order to reach a deeper taste.

Also, if you are making this recipe for the first time, it's always a good idea to check the measurements of the ingredients and adjust them to your taste by experimenting with the ratio of spices to suit your taste. For example, if you prefer a stronger ginger flavor, you can add more ginger. Similarly, if you don't like cardamom, you can reduce the amount or omit it entirely, and so on and so forth.
